Autor de cuatro obras mayores Les soirées de lorchestre (1852), Les grotesques de la musique (1859), À travers chants (1862) y sus Mémoires (1868), es responsable, asimismo, de una producción ingente de artículos periodísticos (recogidos en seis tomos) y de una correspondencia cuya compilación alcanza ya el octavo volumen.El tema fundamental del presente libro, como el de todos los escritos berliozianos, es el de la práctica musical. En él, su autor imagina una orquesta de ópera de mediados del siglo xix, cuyos componentes, en el foso, se dedican a charlar y leer historias durante la representación de obras mediocres.Su estilo, claro y directo, fiel reflejo de su personalidad, se encuentra alejado de los excesos sentimentales propios de la literatura romántica. Además del tema musical y de la escritura en primera persona como testigo de los hechos que quiere narrar, una de las características más sobresalientes de su estilo es su sentido del humor, especialmente el empleo de la ironía como arma eficaz para criticar el arte de baja calidad que triunfaba en los escenarios parisinos.Las tertulias de la orquesta se erige en uno de los monumentos músico-literarios del siglo xix. En la presente edición, la primera crítica en nuestro idioma, se recupera el texto íntegro de la obra, basándose en las dos primeras ediciones, la original de 1852 y la corregida de 1854.

Flaubert escribió Noviembre en 1842, cuando tenía apenas veinte años. Considerada la novela que cierra la producción de juventud de Flaubert (marcada por esta obra y por Memorias de un loco), estamos ante una auténtica bildungsroman sentimental, una sorprendente novela de iniciación amorosa, que explora los sutiles mecanismos de la atracción erótica y los remordimientos provocados por las relaciones adúlteras y el lado pasional de las relaciones humanas. En esta novela, de lectura adictiva, y un delicioso recorrido sobre la exaltación pasional, un muchacho, en el que podemos ver reflejado el propio Flaubert, medita en el curso de un paseo campestre sobre las mujeres (incluyendo a Marie, la prostituta que lo inició en los secretos de la carne, y que es, a partes iguales, "la mujer angélica e intocable, y la hembra fatal armada de un erotismo destructor" en palabra de Lluís Mª Todó). Noviembre es, probablemente, la genuina crónica de una obsesión amorosa, con un joven Flaubert de protagonista. Esta novela, que Flaubert no publicó en vida (era un escritor "enfermo de exactitud", y buena parte de su producción hasta Madame Bovary era considerada por él como "ejercicios de estilo"), pero que siempre consideró con un cariño especial, es una hábil disección del mundo amoroso, en la que se analiza la pasión y el sufrimiento asociado a ella, cuya profundidad psicológica presagia ya el estilo de obras futuras como Madame Bovary o La educación sentimental. En Noviembre apreciamos ya esa condición transgresora y algo irónica que caracteriza la escritura de Flaubert, así como su enfoque, tan contestado por la moral de su época, su fuerza literaria y sus obsesivas preocupaciones estéticas; en fin, todo lo que hará de él uno de los más grandes literatos europeos, puente entre Balzac y Proust, entre lo moderno y lo contemporáneo.

The exhaustive anthology of the 'The Harvard Classics' comprises every major literary figure, philosopher, religion, folklore and historical subject up to the twentieth century. ( newly updated TOC ) The Harvard Universal Classics, originally known as Dr. Eliot's Five Foot Shelf, is a 51-volume anthology of classic works from world literature, compiled and edited by Harvard University president Charles W. Eliot and first published in 1909. Eliot had stated in speeches that the elements of a liberal education could be obtained by spending 15 minutes a day reading from a collection of books that could fit on a five-foot shelf. (Originally he had said a three-foot shelf.) The publisher P. F. Collier and Son saw an opportunity and challenged Eliot to make good on this statement by selecting an appropriate collection of works, and the Harvard Classics was the result. Eliot worked for one year with William A. Neilson, a professor of English; Eliot determined the works to be included and Neilson selected the specific editions and wrote introductory notes. Each volume had 400–450 pages, and the included texts are "so far as possible, entire works or complete segments of the world's written legacies." The collection was widely advertised by Collier and Son, in Collier's and elsewhere, with great success. Eight years later Eliot added a further 20 volumes as a sub-collection titled 'The Harvard Classics Shelf of Fiction', offering some of the greatest novels and short stories of world literature. The exhaustive anthology of the 'The Harvard Classics' comprises every major literary figure, philosopher, religion, folklore and historical subject up to the twentieth century.
