Thanksgiving began as a day of giving thanks and sacrifice for the blessing of the harvest and of the preceding year. Although Thanksgiving has historical roots in religious and cultural traditions, it has long been celebrated as a secular holiday as well. Being the holiday that marks the opening of the Holiday Season, Thanksgiving is an important part of the identity and culture of North America. Have fun with seven short stories selected by the critic August Nemo that bring all the atmosphere of union and gratitude of this date: - An Old-Fashioned Thanksgiving by Louisa May Alcott - Thankful by Mary E. Wilkins Freeman - Turkeys Turning The Tables by William Dean Howells - How We Kept Thanksgiving at Oldtown by Harriet Beecher Stowe - Two Thanksgiving Day Gentlemen by O. Henry - Three Thanksgiving Kisses by Edward Payson Roe - The First Thanksgiving by Albert F. Blaisdell & Francis K. This carefully crafted ebook: "A Christmas Dream & Other Christmas Stories by Louisa May Alcott" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. Extract: "Now, I believe everyone has had a Christmas present and a good time. Nobody has been forgotten, not even the cat," said Mrs. Ward to her daughter, as she looked at Pobbylinda, purring on the rug, with a new ribbon round her neck and the remains of a chicken bone between her paws. It was very late, for the Christmas-tree was stripped, the little folks abed, the baskets and bundles left at poor neighbors' doors, and everything ready for the happy day which would begin as the clock struck twelve. They were resting after their labors, while the yule log burned down; but the mother's words reminded Belinda of one good friend who had received no gift that night." "First, my child, what do you want most?" asked the godmother, quite in the fairy-book style. "To be loved by everybody," answered Becky. "Good!" said the cat. "I'm pleased with that answer, it's sensible, and I'll tell you how to get your wish. Learn to make people love you by loving them." - "Becky's Christmas Dream" Table of Contents: Merry Christmas A Christmas Dream And How It Came True Becky's Christmas Dream Kitty's Class Day Rosa's Tale Tilly's Christmas The Abbot's Ghost, Or Maurice Treherne's Temptation What the Bell Saw and Said Louisa May Alcott (1832-1888) was an American novelist and poet best known as the author of the novel Little Women (1868) and its sequels Little Men (1871) and Jo's Boys (1886).

Among green New England hills stood an ancient house, many-gabled, mossy-roofed, and quaintly built, but picturesque and pleasant to the eye; for a brook ran babbling through the orchard that encompassed it about, a garden-plat stretched upward to the whispering birches on the slope, and patriarchal elms stood sentinel upon the lawn, as they had stood almost a century ago, when the Revoiution rolled that way and found them young. One summer morning, when the air was full of country sounds, of mowers in the meadow, black-birds by the brook, and the low of kine upon the hill-side, the old house wore its cheeriest aspect, and a certain humble history began.

Louisa May Alcott created some fascinating short stories here. „A Modern Cinderella: or The Little Old Shoe And Other Stories” contains four short stories by Louisa May Alcott, the author of „Little Women”: „A Modern Cinderella”, „Debby’s Debut”, „The Brothers”, and „Nelly’s Hospital”. Like her more famous novels, Alcott tells stories of young women interacting with people and events from the late 1800s. Louisa May Alcott bestows a truly amusing and thoroughly modern retelling of The Brothers Grimm’s Cinderella. „Little Women” is certainly Louisa May Alcott’s best known book, but don’t miss her refreshing version of this classic fairy tale, „A Modern Cinderella”. Alcott pokes fun throughout, describing a „cool blonde” as „having many cares those happy little housewives never know.” What modern gal doesn’t appreciate that those old, worn out shoes are dependable and will take you far – forget impractical glass slipper or stilettos! A great addition to the Alcott library of stories.

"A Modern Mephistopheles" was one of the best novels in that remarkable collection of American fiction known as the 'No Name' series. Miss Alcott's name has long been associated with it, because she never made any special effort to conceal the authorship. It is in many respects her most noteworthy effort, and by it her qualities as a writer may safely be judged. The novel is distinctly poetical in motive and the imaginative power displayed in the working out of the plot is to be classed with that of the creative artists of literature. Three souls—nay, four—are here unveiled to us, and while all are brought into bold relief, the true strength of the book undoubtedly lies in the portrayal of Gladys, who is a genuine woman of a fresh and original type. Helwyze is, of course, frankly impossible, and Canaris is only probable, while Olivia is a picturesque foil; but in Gladys there is no incredible or superfluous trait: she is thoroughly and deliciously feminine. The moral lesson is not to be ignored. Like the evil genius of Faust, Helwyze sought to work evil, but the forces that made for righteousness were against him and he was defeated in the very hour of his triumph. It is the recognition of the higher law controlling human deeds that gives "A Modern Mephistopheles" its hold upon popular esteem.
