15 Heroines / Various. - [miejsce nieznane] : Nick Hern Books : Legimi, 2020.
Autor
Forma i typ
Two thousand years ago, the Roman poet Ovid gave voice to a group of inspirational women – queens, sorcerers, pioneers, poets and politicians – in a series of fictional letters called The Heroines. They were the women left in the wake of those swaggering heroes of classical mythology: Theseus, Hercules, Ulysses, Jason, Achilles… Now, drawing inspiration from Ovid, fifteen leading female and non-binary British playwrights dramatise the lives of these fifteen heroines in a series of new monologues for the twenty-first century. 15 Heroines was commissioned by Jermyn Street Theatre, London, and first performed – online and in three parts – in November 2020, presented in partnership with Digital Theatre. This edition of all fifteen monologues is introduced by directors – Adjoa Andoh, Tom Littler and Cat Robey – and writer, broadcaster and classicist Natalie Haynes. The War tells the untold stories of the Trojan War: Oenone, Hermione, Laodamia, Briseis and Penelope, written by Lettie Precious, Sabrina Mahfouz, Charlotte Jones, Abi Zakarian and Hannah Khalil. The Desert is about women going their own way: Deianaria, Canace, Hypermestra, Dido and Sappho, written by April De Angelis, Isley Lynn, Chinonyerem Odimba, Stella Duffy and Lorna French. The Labyrinth is about the women who encountered Jason and Theseus: Ariadne, Phaedra, Phyllis, Hypsipyle and Medea, written by Bryony Lavery, Timberlake Wertenbaker, Samantha Ellis, Natalie Haynes and Juliet Gilkes Romero.

An account of a devastating mining disaster, celebrating the 175th anniversary of The London Library A colliery explosion, more disastrous than any that can be remembered, took place on Thursday afternoon, the 18th June, 1835 101 people were killed in the Wallsend Colliery disaster, of whom 76 were young boys. The death of nearly half the workforce was devastating; almost every family in the community was affected. And yet this explosion was just one of 11 serious explosions at the colliery in 53 years. Mining has always been a notoriously dangerous industry: since the opening of the first coal mine in the UK in 1575, thousands of miners have died in gas explosions, roof cave-ins and flooding. Sir Humphry Davy's invention of the safety lamp in 1815 did reduce the numbers of underground explosions and gassings, but even as recently as 2011, four miners were killed in a mine in Wales. The last pit at Wallsend Colliery was closed in 1935, and the last deep pit mine in the UK closed in 2015. A Full Account of the Dreadful Explosion of Wallsend Colliery by which 101 Human Beings Perished! is part of "Found on the Shelves", published with The London Library. The books in this series have been chosen to give a fascinating insight into the treasures that can be found while browsing in The London Library. Now celebrating its 175th anniversary, with over seventeen miles of shelving and more than a million books, The London Library has become an unrivalled archive of the modes, manners and thoughts of each generation which has helped to form it.

Cycling / Various. - [miejsce nieznane] : Pushkin Press : Legimi, 2016.

A book about the dangers and joys of the 'modern' craze of cycling, celebrating the 175th anniversary of The London Library Directly you are in motion you will feel quite helpless, and experience a sensation of being run away with, and it will seem as if the machine were trying to throw you off The first bicycle was invented at the beginning of the nineteenth century, but it wasn't until the 1890s that the craze really took off. This brought with it the fears, scaremongering, worries and uncertainties that inevitably accompany any new fashion. Women (often unchaperoned and oddly dressed) taking to 'velocipedes'; over-exertion and heart disease; unknown effects on the health and development of the body - these are just some of the fears that haunted the establishment in the late nineteenth century... But with it, of course, came the joy and wonder of 'the easy and agreeable motion' of this thoroughly modern means of locomotion. Cycling: The Craze of the Hour is part of 'Found on the Shelves', published with The London Library. The books in this series have been chosen to give a fascinating insight into the treasures that can be found while browsing in The London Library. Now celebrating its 175th anniversary, with over 17 miles of shelving and more than a million books, The London Library has become an unrivalled archive of the modes, manners and thoughts of each generation which has helped to form it.

Hints on Etiquette / Various. - [miejsce nieznane] : Pushkin Press : Legimi, 2016.

A book of dining, flirting, dancing and smoking, celebrating the 175th anniversary of The London Library If these 'hints' save the blush but upon one cheek, or smooth the path into 'society' of only one honest family, the object of the author will be attained As the Industrial Revolution spread wealth and work around Britain, a stronger and more influential middle class began to arise. And with it came a rise in social anxiety. For while nineteenth-century fashions were constantly changing, the importance of the baffling social codes was entirely rigid, and a newly prosperous and bewildered middle class was in dire need of careful guidance and advice. And so rulebooks such as Hints on Etiquette began to emerge, aiming to demystify the byzantine laws governing behaviour and social interaction. Many of these pieces of advice might seem dated in the 21st century, but the popularity of Downton Abbey, the existence of hereditary peers and a fascination with the royal family are proof that the class system of Victorian Britain still casts its shadow today... Hints on Etiquette is part of "Found on the Shelves", published with The London Library.

Life in a Bustle / Various. - [miejsce nieznane] : Pushkin Press : Legimi, 2016.

A book helping us cope with the pace of life at the turn of the (nineteenth) century, celebrating the 175th anniversary of The London Library Every age has its own special difficulties and dangers. The disease which specially threatens this generation is restlessness, distraction, dissipation of intellectual and moral power. Its consequence is exhaustion and nervous collapse. And its symptom is Hurry At the turn of the (last) century, the world was changing rapidly. Trains were faster, cheaper and more comfortable than ever before. The new craze of bicycling had given men and women unprecedented independence. And the modernisation of telegraphy and the recent invention of the telephone meant that information could be exchanged over huge distances in a mere matter of minutes. And so a disgruntled and discarded older generation took to pamphlets, leaflets and speeches to pass on their wisdom before it was too late. Alarmed but good-natured, didactic but profound, the resulting 'advice to youth' is valuable guidance for anyone troubled by the rush and bustle of the early century's information overload. Life in a Bustle is part of 'Found on the Shelves', published with The London Library.

Starting a business is one thing. Making that business successful is quite another. We've all read the failure statistics of start-ups, yet we entrepreneurs are a determined bunch of people – we are not easily deterred and will try, and try, and try again. We are the drivers of economic growth and job creation, but sadly we are often the unsung heroes of the South African economy. With the lack of support for start-ups and absence of knowledge-sharing, being an entrepreneur is far from easy and what is missing is business guidance and mentorship. Mistakes are made that could be avoided. We certainly don't have all the answers all of the time, especially when we're starting out. But you know who does? Those who've been down the same path before. And that is where the value of this book, The Book Every Entrepreneur Has to Read, lies. It is full of sage advice, lessons learned, and thousands of hours of hard-earned knowledge from thriving entrepreneurs, covering … What they wish they knew when they were starting out. What they wouldn't do again, and the lesson learned. Wisdom they have picked up along the entrepreneurial journey from mindset to idea, planning to execution, funding to partnerships, networking to negotiating, innovation to strategy, hiring to company culture, social media to technology, and everything in between. Don't become a statistic – start reading and make notes and lists of what you can do today, to not only negotiate the sometimes hazardous entrepreneurial journey, but excel from a great idea to a successful business.

A book of trout-fishing, fencing, archery and more, celebrating the 175th anniversary of The London Library One would hear considerably less of hysteria, of morphine-mania, and of other regrettable characteristics of fin-de-siecle existence, if women were to take to fencing as one of the regular occupations of their day Pierre de Coubertin, founder of the modern Olympic Games, said in 1896: "No matter how toughened a sportswoman may be, her organism is not cut out to sustain certain shocks." Women competed in the Olympics for the first time in 1900. Lady Greville, the editor of The Gentlewoman's Book of Sports, hopes that reading what each female expert sportswoman has written about her particular sport or pastime "may encourage other women, as feminine but more timid, to imitate their achievements, and to acquire a keen zest for and sympathy with outdoor pursuits." The Gentlewoman's Book of Sports is part of 'Found on the Shelves', published with The London Library.

A nineteenth-century Scandinavian travelogue in three parts, celebrating the 175th anniversary of The London Library If you give anything to a Norwegian (old meat tins are always thankfully received), he will give your hand a silent grip more expressive than many words The Victorian passion for travel reached the far North in the nineteenth century, and many of the intrepid explorers were attracted by 'the advantages of accessibility, freedom, foreign travel, grand scenery, and, last but not least, comparative cheapness'. 'Six in Norway with a Snark', 'Unprotected Females in Norway' and 'Notes on Norway' all give, in their very different ways, a rounded view of the foreign traditions, language and landscapes encountered in the North in the nineteenth century. The Lure of the North is part of 'Found on the Shelves', published with The London Library. The books in this series have been chosen to give a fascinating insight into the treasures that can be found while browsing in The London Library. 'The one that got away' is the best-known phrase in fishing. Every angler has at least one story of being outwitted by a huge fish. A refrain of the angler, a taunt from those who live with them: it neatly sums up the way in which anglers are obsessed with the fish they almost caught. Yet to hear a fisherman tell the story of an escapee leviathan is to gain a great insight into why he fishes in the first place and why his sport is the most popular in the world. This is a collection of original stories from well-known angling enthusiasts and writers. They tell of unforgettable fish hooked and lost, of glimpsed monsters which haunt the imagination and draw the narrator back to a particular river or lake, time and again, in search of a re-match. David Steel loses his first-ever salmon after an epic struggle on the Ettrick; George Melly is upstaged by a giant Usk brown trout; Jeremy Paxman describes a fishing trip Sri Lankan style; Max Hastings is punished for being blasé and Bernard Venables – extending the definition of 'fish' – relates a thrilling but tragic whaling adventure in the Azores. Chris Yates, former holder of the British carp record, tells of his close encounter with an even bigger carp; David Profumo is humiliated by a 400lb shark; Brian Clarke has his angling life marked by a monster pike and Conrad Voss Bark actually helped his fish get away.

The Right to Fly / Various. - [miejsce nieznane] : Pushkin Press : Legimi, 2016.
Autor
Forma i typ
A book passionately defending balloon flight for human beings, celebrating the 175th anniversary of The London Library From all points of the world I see man rising with the promptness of electricity, soaring in the air, and descending like a bird when and where he wishes Although man's desire to fly has existed for as long as we have (Daedalus and Icarus, the flying chariots of Sanskrit epics, Leonardo da Vinci's Codex on the Flight of Birds), the modern era of flight did not begin until 1783, with the demonstration of the first working hot-air balloon by the Montgolfier brothers. The first passengers were a duck, a sheep and a rooster. Air travel went from strength to strength, and Nadar's sixty-metre high balloon, Le Géant, was the biggest balloon ever built. Requiring 300 seamstresses to assemble its 22,000 yards of silk, it was not a success. But it paved the way for thinking on heavier-than-air flight—which would eventually lead to the "the first sustained and controlled heavier-than-air powered flight" in 1903 by the Wright brothers. The Right to Fly is part of "Found on the Shelves", published with The London Library.
