Vor dem Hintergrund des gescheiterten Generalstreiks 1926 zeichnet Lewis Grassic Gibbon mit liebevoller, oft harscher Komik das Bild einer Gesellschaft im Netz von tradierten Privilegien und Unterdrückung. Die ungewöhnliche kollektive Erzählstimme treibt den Fluss der Geschichte voran und schaut den Figuren in die Köpfe. Klatsch, Gerüchte und persönliche Animositäten bestimmen in rhythmischen Satzketten, im Original teilweise im schottischen Dialekt, das Miteinander und stellen vor allem eines in Frage: historische Wahrheit.
