Reunimos en este volumen los textos en los que Charles Baudelaire se ocupa de la esencia de la risa y la caricatura junto con "El pintor de la vida moderna". Diferentes y publicados en fechas distintas –en los años cincuenta del siglo XIX los primeros, en 1863 "El pintor de la vida moderna"–, guardan una estrecha relación en la caracterización del mundo moderno que realiza el poeta. Daumier, Grandville, Gavarni son "pintores" de la vida moderna en tanta o mayor medida que Constantin Guys, y la articulación de horror y belleza, la presencia de la belleza en la fealdad, la temporalidad de lo transitorio son rasgos tan adecuados para un pintor de "croquis de costumbres" como de los caricaturistas, que hacen uso de estos motivos de forma muchas veces más radical que los pintores de género. Textos diversos, ponen de relieve en su lectura conjunta la índole del pensamiento de Baudelaire en toda su complejidad y evitan la comprensión reductora a la que en muchos casos han sido sometidos. Si "El pintor de la vida moderna" descubre la belleza fugitiva en el pintoresquismo de la vida cotidiana, son las incidencias de esta vida cotidiana las que protagonizan las caricaturas, la sátira y lo grotesco, motivos que Baudelaire analiza en profundidad al escribir sobre la esencia de la risa.

Los Poemas en prosa (Petits Poèmes en Prose) es una colección de 50 poemas escritos por Baudelaire en sus últimos años de vida. El escritor francés quería titularlos Le spleen de París, pero, sorprendiéndole la muerte en 1867, no llegó a verlos publicados en tomo, pues no se imprimieron todos juntos hasta 1869, en la edición que Michel Lévy hizo de las obras completas del autor. Menos leídos que Las flores del mal son, no obstante, igualmente característicos. Muchos de estos breves poemas en prosa tocan el mismo tema que aquellos: la melancolía, el temor al paso del tiempo, la crítica contra la religión y la moral, la aversión contra la sociedad, y lo desenvuelven de forma semejante a la de algunas famosas poesías de aquel libro. El spleen, o melancolía que llega sin razón alguna, recorren la obra de principio a fin. Los poemas de este libro pueden leerse de manera aleatoria como si de relatos cortos se tratara, puesto que no existe una continuidad entre las distintas partes. Tal y como dice Baudelaire en la dedicatoria a su colega Arsène Houssaye: "Considere, se lo ruego, cuán admirable es la comodidad que esta combinación nos ofrece a todos: a usted, a mí y al lector. Podemos cortar por donde queramos: yo, mi divagación; usted, el manuscrito, y el lector la lectura; puesto que no dejo colgada del hilo interminable de una intriga superflua la voluntad zahareña de éste. Quite una vértebra, y los dos pedazos de esta fantasía tortuosa se volverán a unir sin trabajo. Píquela en muchos fragmentos, y ya verá como cada uno puede tener existencia por sí". Con esta obra Baudelaire rompe con la estructura poética clásica e influye de manera directa en los escritores simbolistas.

Les Fleurs du mal (English: The Flowers of Evil) is a volume of French poetry by Charles Baudelaire. First published in 1857, it was important in the symbolist and modernist movements. The poems deal with themes relating to decadence and eroticism. This Bilingual English - French edition provides the original text by Baudelaire and its English translation by Cyril Scott. The initial publication of the book was arranged in six thematically segregated sections: 1. Spleen et Idéal (Spleen and Ideal) 2. Tableaux parisiens (Parisian Scenes) 3. Le Vin (Wine) 4. Fleurs du mal (Flowers of Evil) 5. Révolte (Revolt) 6. La Mort (Death) Baudelaire dedicated the book to the poet Théophile Gautier, describing him as a parfait magicien des lettres françaises ("a perfect magician of French letters"). The foreword to the volume, Au Lecteur ("To the Reader"), identifying Satan with the pseudonymous alchemist Hermes Trismegistus. The author and the publisher were prosecuted under the regime of the Second Empire as an outrage aux bonnes moeurs ("an insult to public decency"). As a consequence of this prosecution, Baudelaire was fined 300 francs. Six poems from the work were suppressed and the ban on their publication was not lifted in France until 1949. These poems were "Lesbos"; "Femmes damnées (À la pâle clarté)" (or "Women Doomed (In the pale glimmer...)"); "Le Léthé" (or "Lethe"); "À celle qui est trop gaie" (or "To Her Who Is Too Joyful"); "Les Bijoux" (or "The Jewels"); and " Les "Métamorphoses du Vampire" (or "The Vampire's Metamorphoses"). These were later published in Brussels in a small volume entitled Les Épaves (Scraps or Jetsam). On the other hand, upon reading "The Swan" (or "Le Cygne") from Les Fleurs du mal, Victor Hugo announced that Baudelaire had created "un nouveau frisson" (a new shudder, a new thrill) in literature. In the wake of the prosecution, a second edition was issued in 1861 which added 35 new poems, removed the six suppressed poems, and added a new section entitled Tableaux Parisiens. A posthumous third edition, with a preface by Théophile Gautier and including 14 previously unpublished poems, was issued in 1868.
